Hastings and St Leonards Observer - Saturday 07 December 1901
DEATH OF MR. GEORGE RANT. :
We  regret to announce the death of Mr. George Rant, of Banavie, St. Helen's-road. which took place at his residence on Monday evening. Mr. Rant had been in feeble health for some time, but it was only recently that his illness assumed acute form. He was medically attended by Dr. Barber. Mr. Rant came from Abingdon, Where he had been in business, to Hastings, for his health in 1888, and lived for about five years in St. Helen's-crescent, afterwards removing to Banavie.

He was a very intimate friend of townsman, Mr. Charles Coxetor, who also came to Hastings from Abingdon, and was a well-known member of the Alexandra Bowls Club.

Mr. Rant was formerly a regular worshipper at Mount Pleasant Congregational Church. He was 72 years of age. Much sympathy will be felt for Mrs. Rant and her family in their loss.

Sabina lived a full life, worshipping at Mount Pleasant  Church, seeing several of her children married locally, regularly donating to charity and volunteering at sales of work, et al.

An idea of the Rants' lifestyle may be gathered from the listing of household items due to be sold by auction after Selina's death, comprising all brass, iron, carved mahogany, and canopy bedsteads and excellent bedding, inlaid burr walnut wardrobe, six antique and modern chests of drawers, several well-made mahogany dressing tables and antique dwarf commode and liner, toilet sets, towel airers, chamber cupboards and the usual bedroom appointments, very superior dining-room furniture, sideboards, chiffonier, easy, lounge, rocking and other chairs, occasional chairs and table covers, whatnots, two handsome inlaid and glassed china cabinets, antique secretaire and other bookcases, volumes of books, standard and other works, empire and other clocks, fine gilt framed chimney glasses, wall mirrors, well-made invalid chair by Carter, and wicker invalid bath-chair, several Axminster. squares and other carpets, rugs, window draperies, lots of lino  floor coverings, tricord cottage pianoforte by Kirkman. music stool and cabinet, bagatelle board and accessories. iron fire-proof safe, by S. Withers and Son. several fine engravings after J. M. W. Turner, R-A.« Daniel Maclise.
